It was the first I got after selecting ‘ BMW’ and ‘from 2018' to ‘present’.
I wasn’t looking at any of these cars.
They aren’t for me.

Lol. Funny. Because when 1 Series owners were asked by BMW, the majority thought their 1 Series was FWD. This was BMW testing the waters on how a FWD BMW would be taken.
The 2 Series Active Tourer and Grand Tourer have sold very well despite some moaning from BMW purists on them being FWD. China has a FWD ! Series saloon already and the rest of the 1 Series vehicles will soon be FWD. BMW argue will give it better handling and more usable space for the interior.

Uugh its so ugly!
I imagine most people bought a 1 series to just show off that they have a BMW. Only a few people must have bought a 135i hatchback.
It makes sense then that thw majority didn't know they were RWD.

No most people bought the 3 Series to show they had a BMW, mainly the coupe .
Hence why BMW divided the 3 Series vehicles into 3 Series saloons, Gran Turismos and estates and made the 4 Series into the coupes and convertibles. In Europe BMW found there was more 3 Series vehicles on the road than there was Ford Mondeos.
1 Series was seen as more compact and practical and mostly bought by females while males still gravitated to 3 Series coupes if their insurance would cover it and saloons if not. The 1 Series later moved around the gender spectrum as it established itself as a fun little car.
I found the 1 Series while looking smaller than the 3 Series on the outside, wasn’t all that much, but inside, was in fact much smaller and dark. I didn’t like it.

There was a yobbo boy racer hierarchy .
You went from what ever your mum drove as your first car, then you got an old Fiesta XR2 or Escort XR3i, then you went up to a VW Golf (hopefully a GTi, but if not, you made it look like a GTi), then you went either to Audi A4 saloon and then BMW M3 or bypassed the Audi and went straight to M3. If you couldn’t afford the higher tax bracket of the coupe, you made do with the saloon unto your insurance premiums went down either from your age increasing or the points on your licence for speeding went down. Lol.
Even today there are cars that in there first two years are bought by specific genders, age groups, classes, etc... some have an over lap but few when it comes to first cars and then first performance cars.
Just like for many their first car is lik ely to be a Ford Fiesta, however if the insurance quotes are out of your price range a young male may gravitate towards a three or four year old Vauxhall Corsa 3 door, while a female who may want more safety and reliability may be inclin ed to go up a level and go for a VW Polo 5 d oor.
